Laboratory-grown diamonds
Everything you need to know about laboratory-grown diamonds alongside our latest jewellery collection...
1. Are they real diamonds?
The short answer is yes -lab grown diamonds are real diamonds.
A diamond is defined by its crystal structure and chemical composition, not by where it forms.
All diamonds, whether mined from the earth or grown in a laboratory, are the following:
-Pure carbon (C)
-Arranged in a cubic crystal lattice structure
-Ranking 10 on the Mohs hardness scale
-Exhibiting identical optical properties (refractive index, dispersion, brilliance)
If a stone meets these criteria, it is scientifically classified as a diamond. Lab grown diamonds meet all of them!
2. What are the pros and cons of lab grown diamonds?
Pros:
Real diamond: Same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds.
Lower cost: Typically 30–50% cheaper than natural diamonds.
Ethical & eco-friendly: Avoids mining-related human and environmental issues.
Customizable: Easier to produce large sizes, rare cuts, or fancy colors.
Quick availability: Can be produced on demand.
Cons:
Lower resale value: Depreciates faster than natural diamonds.
Perceived prestige: Lacks geological rarity and traditional sentiment.
Production inclusions: Tiny metallic or growth-related marks may occur.
Energy use: Lab production (especially HPHT) can consume significant energy.
Insurance/appraisal nuances: Some insurers may value them differently than natural diamonds.
4. Can you tell if its lab grown?
No, you cannot reliably identify a lab grown diamond with the naked eye or standard jewellery tools. They look, feel, and perform exactly like natural diamonds. The only practical way to know is through certification from a reputable lab (like Gemmological Institute of America or International Gemmological Institute) or specialized gemmological testing.
What jewellery can be made with lab grown diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds can be used to make almost any type of jewellery that traditional mined diamonds are used for. Because they have the same optical and physical properties as natural diamonds, the possibilities are nearly limitless.
Here, at Temprell we offer both- it's ultimately your decision what you would prefer, natural or lab-grown. However, our lab grown collection is looking better than ever with a style to suit all...
